Standard 6: Becoming a Professional
Key Elements of Standard 6
Key Elements of Standard 6
As an early childhood teacher, I must be a professional. In order to be a professional, I must involve and recognize myself in the early childhood field. In addition, I must also uphold NAEYC’s Code of Ethical Conduct. Also, I must use collaboration and other resources to keep myself informed with the many changes within the field. It is also necessary that I use my knowledge to reflect on the perspectives of early childhood. Lastly, I also have to engage myself in advocacy for children and their families.
6a. Identifying and involving oneself with the early childhood field.
For key element 6A, I have included my resume to demonstrate my understanding of this key element. My resume is proof of my understanding of this key element because it states that I am employed within the child development field. It also displays my education completion. Both of these aspects proves that I identify myself as an early childhood professional and it shows my commitment to the early childhood field. In the future, I plan to further my education and seek my B.A in early childhood and continue to work within the field.
6b. Knowing about and upholding ethical standards and other professional guidelines.
For key element 6 B, I have included a picture of a child that didn't portray the child’s face because I wanted to maintain confidentiality. This picture depicts my understanding of this key element because I upheld NAEYC’s Code of Ethical Conduct (section P-2.13) on confidentiality. When working in the field, I know that it is important to maintain confidentiality for the safety of children and their families. In the future, I plan to follow NAEYC’s Code of Ethical Conduct and other ethical codes because I believe the ethical code helps direct me through the child development field.

In the future, I plan to use collaboration to keep myself informed about all the changes within the field.
To further my understanding of this key element I have included my subscription to “Exchange Everyday” . This subscription is proof of my understanding because I also use technology to keep myself informed about the early childhood field. For key element 6D, I have included a reflection paper that I constructed based on an article about S.T.E.M which in an acronym for science, technology, engineering, and math. This artifact demonstrates my understanding of this key element because I reflected on a critical topic in the early childhood field. Then, after reflecting I integrated S.T.E.M topics and activates into my classroom. In the future, I plan to use my knowledge and reflections, on important perspectives and topics in the early childhood field, to integrate developmentally appropriate activates within my classroom.
