Standard 5: Using Content Knowledge to Build Meaningful Curriculum
Key elements of Standard 5:
Key elements of Standard 5:
As a professional, I must use my understanding and knowledge within the academic disciplines to build an effective curriculum. In order to do that, I must utilize my knowledge of each content area; however, when I do not have great understanding of a subject, I must use my resources to become informed. Furthermore, I must learn and practice inquiry tools and central concepts within my classroom to help further each child’s understating of the academic disciplines. Lastly, I must align my curriculum with appropriate learning standards to create a developmentally appropriate and challenging environment for all children.
5a. Understanding content knowledge and reources in academic disciplines.
For key element 5 A, I have included a math lesson plan for preschool-aged children that I created. The math lesson plan demonstrates my understanding of this key element because I had to understand how this age group comprehends math. In addition, I had to apply my knowledge of math to this activity. To elaborate, I know how to count and use standard measurements; although preschool aged children may be able to count, they won’t know how to use standard measurements so to challenge them I had to start with nonstandard measurements. Furthermore, as I created the lesson plan I used resources to help plan my activity. Some resources I used was a book titled “The Best Bug Parade” and the internet. I also had to understand how children comprehend math. In the future, I plan to continue my education within the academic disciplines so I can share my knowledge with children in my class. Also, I will use resources to help plan curriculum and my understanding of each child’s strengths to further the developmental growth of all children.

5b. Knowing about and using the central concepts inquiry tools, and structures of content areas or academic disciplines.
For key element 5 B, I have included a concept map that I created within my Pre. Kindergarten classroom at A-Karrasel Child Care Center. This artifact demonstrates my understanding of this key element because I used a web to help the children learn about the letter “M” and words that start with that letter. This web prepared the children for other actives that were associated with that letter, it created organization, and the children had a better understanding of that letter. Although this is only one central concept, I do understand that there are many more central concepts and inquiry tools. In the future, I plan to learn more central concepts and inquiry tools through my personal experience in the child development field. Likewise, I plan to utilize central concepts and inquiry tools to help broaden each child’s knowledge within the academic disciplines.
To further my understanding of this key element, I also included a picture of the letter M that the children decorated using words from our concept map. This demonstrates 5 B because I used a different inquire tool to further the children's knowledge in an academic discipline.

5c. Using their knowledge, appropriate early learning standards, and other resources to design, implement, and evaluate meaningful, challenging curricula for each child.
For key element 5 C, I have included a written lesson plan that I created at my practicum site, Christopher House. I have also included a video of myself implementing this lesson plan. These artifacts demonstrates my understanding of this key element because when I created the lesson plan I aligned it to the learning objectives of Teaching Strategies Gold because I wanted to evaluate my lesson plan and to make sure that it was developmentally appropriate for the age group. Additionally, when I created this lesson plan I made accommodations for all the children. Through this I was able to implement a challenging curriculum within my practicum classroom. In the future, I plan to use learning standards and other resources when creating meaningful curriculum. Lastly, I also plan to make accommodations for all the children within my classroom to build a meaningful and challenging environment.
