Standard 1: Promoting Child Development and Learning
Key Elements of Standard 1
Key Elements of Standard 1
As an early childhood professional, I need to encourage and support children’s development and growth in all developmental domains. By doing this, I must understand how and when children develop in the developmental domains. I must also understand the multiple influences and its effects within children’s lives. Lastly, I must be able to apply those things into the classroom or when I’m working with children to create a creative and supporting environment that is healthy and appropriate.
1 A. Knowing and understanding young children’s characteristics and needs.
For key element 1 A, I will use two observations, one is an infant observation and the second is a preschool aged observation. These artifacts demonstrates my understanding of this key element because it shows the developmental stages of a nine month old and the developmental stages of preschoolers. In the future, I will use this information and observation strategies in my profession because it will help me to understand the different developmental stages that children of all ages are in. Ultimately, helping me to meet each child's needs developmentally and socially.

1 B. Knowing and understanding the multiple influences on development and learning.
For key element 1 B, I will use a parent
interview that I completed with a parent at A-Karrasel Child Care Center. This
interview was about receiving more insight about a child and his development.
The parent interview demonstrates my understanding of this key element
because it showed me a little bit about his culture, community, and family
structure. Furthermore, it helped me to understand why and where this child is at
developmentally due to the factors that influenced him. In the future, I will use a parent
interview when I meet new families because it will help me learn more about each family. I will also use
interview techniques to learn more about
the multiple influences within each child’s life. Doing this will help me to understand why and where each child is at developmentally and through that I can assist every child's growth in all areas of development.

1 C. Using developmental knowledge to create healthy, respectful, supportive, and challenging learning environments.
For key element 1 C, I will use an outdoor playground designed for kindergartners that I and other classmates created during Child Development 120, Introduction to Early Childhood Education. For this assignment we chose this age group and the outdoor environment because we knew that it is still vital for kindergartners to develop their gross motor skills, yet they do not get many opportunities to develop that skill in our Chicago Public Schools because CPS feels that academics is more important. This playground demonstrates my understanding of this key element because by using our developmental knowledge we were able to create an outdoor environment where children can be safe, are supported, and are challenged. Although many playgrounds may not look like the one I created, in the future I can still provide outdoor toys or activates to the children that will develop their motor skills, I will encourage them to grow in their strengths and others areas that are challenging to them, and I will keep the playground clean.
