Standard 4:Using Developmentally Effective Approaches to Connect With Children and Families
Key Elements for Standard 4:
Key Elements for Standard 4:
As an early childhood professional, I recognize that I must use effective approaches to connect and to communicate with the children in my classroom and with their families. In order to accomplish that, I understand that I need to know how to create positive relationships and how to support all interactions between the children and their families. Likewise, it is essential that I know many efficient strategies and tools within the early childhood field, including appropriate uses of technology. In addition, it is also important to know that there are different developmentally appropriate techniques and learning approaches that teachers use to support the development of children. Lastly, it is necessary that I reflect on my own practice and on what is occurring within my classroom because it will bring a positive outcome for every child.
4a. Understanding positive relationships and supportive interactions as the foundation of their work with children.
For key element 4 A, I have included a video of myself reading a story to a preschool-aged child. This video demonstrates my understanding of this key element because I understand that preschool-aged children need to be read to at a slow pace. I am also aware that this child needed something in his hands to play with in order for him to participate and comprehend the story. Lastly, I supported this child through questioning about the story and through fun interactions. In the future, one way that I plan to support children will be through playful story times; furthermore, I will build positive relationships by understanding each child’s developmental needs.

4b. Knowing and understanding effective strategies and tools for early education.
For key element 4 B, I have included a wonderful field-based project that I completed in Child Development 143, Science and Math for Young Children. The purpose of this field based project was to find a child’s interests, what the child knew about the topic, expand the child’s knowledge, and document it. This artifact is proof of my understanding of key element 4 B because I used an effective strategy which was planning ahead through the use of online research. I also, created a web with the child before and after the field trip to the shed aquarium and took pictures to document his growth. In the future, I plan to use field based projects to support each child’s developmental growth. Furthermore, I plan to learn other effective strategies and tools from my experience as a student teacher and utilize them within my own classroom.

4c. Using a broad repertoire of developmentally appropriate teaching/learning approaches.
For key element 4 C, I have included a hand washing mini-lesson plan that I completed in Child Development 107, Health, Safety, and Nutrition. This assignment is evidence of my understanding of this key element because I created many ways to teach preschool aged children how to wash their hands properly. I then applied one hand washing technique to my Pre. Kindergarten classroom at A-Karrasel Child Care Center. Although I only used one technique, I do understand that there are many different ways to teach children. In the future, I plan to utilize all developmental appropriate techniques in order to ensure that all the children’s needs and strengths are being supported.

4d. Reflecting on their own practice to promote positive outcomes for each child.
For key element 4 D, I have decided to use standard 3 reflections and its artifacts within in my e-portfolio. This artifact is proof of my understanding of this key element because I had to document and observe children. Through observation and documentation, I was able to reflect on my own practices, how I could have improved, and how the children were progressing; ultimately, this helped me to create positive outcomes for every child. Although I have included standard 3 as an artifact, I believe that my entire e-portfolio is a reflection of my personal experiences with children and of what I have learned about children’s development. In the future, I plan to use reflection within myself as a teacher and within my classroom so that I may connect and collaborate with children and their families.
